iRacing Radio Information

I used to have a lot of questions about the iRacing radio, and I think it’s safe to say that a lot of people still do. I’ve learned a lot about it, mostly from emails exchanged with iRacing. Here’s some of the thing’s I’ve learned. I hope it answers some questions.

  • The iRacing radio receiver is like a scanner. It scans all of the channels which you have permission to access. For example, if you’re in a session in which teams are enabled, it will scan @ALLTEAMS, @TEAM, and @RACECONTROL. If anyone is transmitting on one of these channels, the scanner will stop to pick up that transmission.
  • If you host races, you may want to make use of the @ADMIN channel. Any administrator in the session can hear any transmission on the @ADMIN channel. In order to transmit on the @ADMIN channel, you can bind a key or button to scroll through the radio channels, or you can type @transmit @admin in the session chat.
  • If teams are enabled in a session, you can use the @TEAM channel to communicate privately with members of your team.
  • If you frequently race with a group of friends and you want to communicate with them privately, you can create a special channel. One way to do this is to add the channel manually. Let’s say you want to add a channel called @FRIPFRAP. You would enter the following in the session chat: @add @fripfrap. The only people who can access the @FRIPFRAP channel are those who know the name of the channel. The channel is not password protected, so you would share the name of the channel only with your group of friends. If you use your private channel often, you can set it up so that it’s always on your radio. You do this by editing a file: Documents/iRacing/scripts/radio/Launch.txt. You can open this file with any plain text editor such as Notepad. Put a line at the beginning of the file to add your custom channel name, like this: add @fripfrap. After you do that, save the file and close it. Now, any time you enter an iRacing session, your custom channel will be available on your radio.
