I stumbled upon this video by Joe Lusk. It has some pretty good tips and tricks on how to drive a dirt car on iRacing. Joe says the video applies to real life and the knowledge he’s gained in his real life dirt racing career, but it is made within the scope of iRacing. This is an excellent video for new racers and even experts can probably gain something from it.
More specifically, the video covers the absolute basics of dirt track racing. The three main points covered are
Thrustmaster T300RS GT Steering Wheel & Pedal Set
The T300 is a proven mid-range wheel with smooth belt-driven force feedback and a responsive brushless motor for clear track feel. An 11-inch leather wheel, solid three-pedal GT set, and PS5, PS4, and PC compatibility give racers the precision to brake later, hold tighter lines, and improve lap after lap.

- how to set the car for a corner (aka the Scandinavian Flick),
- how to control the throttle through the corner after you get the car set and
- what the different surfaces or track states mean.
One thing that Joe says in the video around 6:15 is a little dated: “If you’re in a stock car or a Late Model, and you’re at anywhere that isn’t Eldora, you’re going to aim for the very inside of the track.” Along with Eldora, you can add Limaland and The Dirt Track at Charlotte to that list. These tracks were added after Joe made this video.
Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0
Master your laps without dominating the room. The Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 stands rock-solid for direct-drive wheels, yet folds away in seconds when real life calls. Full adjustability for wheel, pedals, and shifter lets a man settle into his proper position the honest way. A clever chair cradle keeps your seat planted under hard braking, while predrilled mounts welcome Thrustmaster, Fanatec, Logitech, and the rest. Upgrade later to a full cockpit with the GTSeat add-on. Serious performance, sensible footprint—no compromises required.

Having said that, there are times when you can run just as fast on the inside at Limaland and The Dirt Track at Charlotte, but it’s pretty rare. It really depends on the car and the condition of the track. I think the 305 Sprint is faster on the inside at Limaland. Sometimes the Pro Late Model will run pretty well on the inside at The Dirt Track at Charlotte with a slightly shorter gear in your setup, particularly after the outside line becomes dry and slick.
So now, on with the video.
